Many people read their Bible like it's a chore, a punishment, or a dreaded, regretful obligation. Many find themselves getting sleepy, bored, or distracted while reading their bible. Here are 3 new perspectives on reading God's word for you to adopt:

1. Your Bible is a history book. It’s packed with drama, victories, betrayals, miracles, and cliff-hangers. These aren’t just old stories; they shape how we see life today and show us what paths to take (and which ones to avoid).
2. Your Bible is a life manual. It doesn’t just tell stories; it teaches principles. From wisdom for relationships to guidance in trials, it gives direction for everyday choices and long-term purpose.
3. Your Bible is a rule book. Not boring, rigid rules, but weapons for winning. God’s commands protect us, equip us, and help us stand strong when life tries to knock us down.

Also, we won't pretend the KJV is easy to read for all. While it is most commonly used in our studies, other version that are easier to read include:

• New King James Version (NKJV): Very close to the KJV, but without all of the occurrences of "thee," "thou," "ye," and other words that we typically don't use today.
• The Passion Translation: This is a newer translation that really puts scripture in one of the most easy-to-read verbiages.
• Amplified Bible: Verses are typically longer, but it's because they provide context, explanations, and definitions throughout.
• The Message: It's like reading a holy text message from your hood, educated homebody or homegirl.

Lastly, to keep your interest, here are 2 suggestions:

1. Find specific stories to read. This will help you not feel like you're all over the place and reading pointlessly. Want to read a story about how this man tried to unalive a whole population and a woman spoke up and had him and his family unalived? Read the book of Esther. Want to read a story about how a man put his life on the line to help his best friend? Start at I Samuel 18. I created a list of Bible stories for you to read as a guide. Get it here (it's completely free).
2. Invest in a Study Bible. A good Study Bible will have notes and related scriptures that will enlighten and guide you as you read. Personally, this one is my favorite — but there are plenty of options out there.

IMPORTANT: Just like the average person doesn't always feel like going to the gym or eating 100% healthily, you won't always feel like reading your Bible. Sometimes, you've got to push beyond your feelings and read your Bible. And sooner or later, you'll develop a hunger and a habit of consistently reading and studying.

I remember going to a Sunday Morning Service around 2019. I walked into the lobby and sanctuary with my macchiato in hand, wearing a graphic t-shirt, ripped jeans, a baseball cap, and flip flops. To my right was a man with diamond stud earrings, wearing a tucked-in polo shirt, slacks, and loafers; he looked very business casual. To my left was a man in a multi-piece suit and fancy oxford shoes with a bottle of water; he looked like he was ready to preach with his best hoop and holler.

Neither of us received side-eyes. Neither of us felt out of place. Neither of us received a "cold shoulder."

We each received warm welcomes while coming into the church. We each worshipped together. We each blended in with the others. We each prayed in tongues and amen-ed the pastor.

Once I noticed it, I said "This is what church should be." Diverse. Welcoming. Comfortable. Still holy.

Of course, your attire should be appropriate. But whether you're still in your work clothes or wearing your Sunday best, you're welcome to any REFORMED gathering.

It's important to know that there is an exchange in salvation. You must surrender your life to God. This means your life is not your own, which comes with setting aside selfish interests, having a willingness to endure, and follow Christ. The exchange is your way of life for God's way of life. This can be better understood through reading Luke 9:23.

Next, Romans 10:9 lets us know if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

You must also receive and welcome the Lord into your life and into your heart to receive the right to become children of God, according to John 1:12.

And all that starts with a simple prayer. Pray this out loud:

Lord Jesus, thank you for allowing me this opportunity to come into fellowship with You. I understand that I no longer live for myself, but I live for you. I lay down my will and take on your perfect will for my life. I acknowledge and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that You sent Him to earth to die for my sins, shames, and ailments. And I believe in my heart that He died and rose from the dead so that I may be saved. Now, I receive and welcome the fullness of the Lord into my life and into my heart. I ask that the Spirit of God lives inside of me, guides me, comforts me, encourages me, and loves me. I am now a child of God. It is so, in Jesus' name. AMEN!!
